Down on the Farm: News and Notes from Gale Woods

Prized piglets born; summer camp spots still available; book club gathers; farm market sets up shop tomorrow.

Piglets in June

The first of two litters of piglets were born on Sunday morning. Gale Woods Farm is raising Berkshire hogs this year, a breed renowned for the flavor of the pork. Their meat is called Kurobuta Pork and is the most highly prized pork in Japan.

This delightful breed of pig is one of the oldest breeds known to exist. Its origins trace back to England, where Berkshire pork became the favored breed of the English royalty. Farm staff were surprised that this first sow had such a small litter (only five piglets). The farm's second sow is a Berkshire/Red Wattle cross, and she is due sometime this week.
