By Abraham Thaler, MWHS Student Senate PR Chair

As September nears its close, there is only one thing on the minds of students at Mound Westonka High School: Homecoming!

The school is rumbling with excitement, and the town is just as ready for a week of celebrations. The week gets its kick off with Coronation on September 29 at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. The Homecoming court has been chosen, and the candidates for Homecoming Queen are Alex Riffle, Ashley Woytcke , Carly Koch, Jessie Heusinkveld, Katie Otto, Megan Bryan and Taylor Heusinkveld. This year’s candidates for King are Arend Turner, Bryan Tierney, David Hughes, Jack Leschisin, Ryder Schmidt, Tynan O’Hara and Willie Maahs.

The week of festivities starts off in the school, with dress-up days and various sporting events. Monday, September 30 is Country Club Prep day, so be sure to wear your sweater vests and khakis. On Tuesday, October 1t we kick it back and celebrate spring break a little early with a Tropical Paradise day. Remember to bring your floaties! Be sure to gear up for a little competition on Wednesday, October 2 for Urkel v. Athlete day. Thursday, October 3 takes a turn for fashion’s worst with Denim Day, where no amount of denim is too much. Finally, we end the week on Friday, October 4 with White Hawks Spirit Day! If you’re in need of some spirit wear, Student Senate will be selling Super Fan t-shirts as well as dance tickets during lunch, all for $10. We strongly encourage all students and staff to participate wholeheartedly in the dress-up days during Homecoming week!

The energy all leads up to Friday, and it starts off with a bang at the Pep Fest in the gym at 2:15 p.m. Before the football game’s grand kick off, the annual Homecoming Parade begins at 5 p.m. at Hilltop, and it ends at the Mound Westonka High School parking lot. The mini-carnival is back this year for the whole family to enjoy right in front of Haddorff Field with bouncy houses, face painting, cotton candy, and more!

As a fundraiser for Ms. Gravelle, a staff member at the high school who was recently diagnosed with cancer, we will also have a dunk tank to super-soak staff members and others! The junk car is back as well, with a charge of $1.00 to take a hit at it. This pre-game pump up also encourages all activities and clubs to tailgate with their team to show some of their own spirit.

The big game finally starts at 7 p.m. that night. This year we go head-to-head against Orono on the field, and we fully expect the stands to be jam-packed! Finally, on Saturday, we will hold the semi-formal Homecoming Dance from 8 - 11 p.m. in the Mound Westonka High School cafeteria. This is for students in grades 10 -12. Tickets are available at the door for $10 per person. Student Senate encourages everyone to attend as many of the activities as you can!
