Excelsior Remembers Nation's Fallen Heroes

Hundreds paid their respects during Monday ceremony, parade and cemetery service.

Monday morning's severe weather threat wasn't enough to wash out this year's Memorial Day remembrences in Excelsior.

Led by American Legion Post 259 and VFW Post 5919, veterans from WWII through Operation Iraqi Freedom were joined by hundreds of community members in celebrating the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.

A full house gathered at Excelsior Elementary School for the reading of home town names Excelsior has lost in battle and to recognize veterans in attendence.

Delayed by about 30 minutes due to strong storms in the area, skies cleared in time for residents to line Water Street for the city's annual parade through town.

A tribute at Oakhill Cemetery included wreath layings, a rifle salute and the trumpeting of Taps.
