Learn About the History of Big Island this Thursday in Shorewood

At the center of lower Lake Minnetonka, Big Island was the site of a Dakota Indian sugaring camp, a pioneer homestead, a groggery, a legendary estate, an amusement park, a game farm and a veteran's rest camp.

Join the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society this Thursday at the Southshore Center on Country Club Road in Shorewood, when local historian and writer Paul Maravelas will present on the history of Big Island.

At the center of lower Lake Minnetonka, Big Island was the site of a Dakota Indian sugaring camp, a pioneer homestead, a groggery, a legendary estate, an amusement park, a game farm and a veteran’s rest camp. 

This free program will begin at 7 p.m., and all are welcome.

The historical society will have copies of "The Big Water" for sale at this event, including a limited number of copies signed by the author, Fred Johnson.

Other news and notes:

  • Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society members are reminded that next Tuesday, June 25, at 6 p.m. is the annual meeting and election of officers. This will also be held at Southshore Center. Members are asked to bring a dish to share.
  • The ELMHS is still in need of volunteers to host the museum over the summer season. If you haven't volunteered and want to get involved, we would be happy to have you! Training is provided.
