2013 Excelsior Apple Day: Everything You Need to Know

On Sept. 7 there will be a 5k run, pie eating contest, baking contest and a beer and wine garden featuring local brews and wines from nearby vineyards.

Celebrated since 1929, Apple Day continues this year with many of the strong traditions that have made this one of the most popular street festivals in the Lake Minnetonka area.

This year the Excelsior–Lake Minnetonka Chamber has been handed over the mighty task of planning Apple Day from Darel and Vernie Leipold, and Linda Hotvet—the chamber's director—is thrilled. Local businesses such as Youngstedt’s, Renewal by Andersen, Bean’s Greenwood Marina, Beacon Bank, and Brain Balance Center have already signed on as 2013 Apple Day sponsors.

New this year: the Park Nicollet Apple of the Lake 5K Fun Run.

Runners will start at Water Street and County Road 19, run through the picturesque streets of Excelsior, Shorewood, and finish on the scenic LRT trail.
These are the same grounds where some of the area's first local apple crops were born. This run will conclude on the LRT trail right at Water Street, putting runners within the heart of the festivities. Race sponsors include Park Nicollet ClinicLexus of Wayzata, Patisserie Margo, WSB & AssociatesBeacon Bank,  Lake Minnetonka Orthodontics, Excelsior Brewing Co. and Tonka Beer Company, so far.

This race is a fundraiser and will provide the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce with funds necessary to support local programs offered year-round, such as Art on the Lake, Fourth of July, Apple Day, Street Décor and the new Welcome Center at 37 Water Street—as well as many others.

Enter this year's Pie Baking Contest, with local celebrity judges including Marjorie Johnson, from Blue Ribbon Baking, and other local culinary experts. There will also be a Pie Eating contest, so get ready to watch some good old-fashioned fun taking center stage.

Many vendors who have been with Apple Day for years will also be back, plus many new vendors. Community organizations, including churches and non-profits will also be present.

Also added to the lineup is Excelsior Real Estate’s Happy Apple Kids’ Corner—chock full of activities for kids of all ages nestled in the lot of Gary’s First Class Car Care.

Finally, the evening will end with Bean’s Greenwood Marina’s Apple Day Stage, featuring Tim Mahoney and his band, Paul Christian and local
favorites, the Ornery B’s.

There will be a beer and wine garden featuring local brews and wines from nearby vineyards.
