Wayzata Sends Three To State Tennis Meet

Senior Lucia Solis, doubles tandem Caitlin Eichten and Ali Heiring headed to Class AA meet

Three members of girls tennis team advanced to the Class AA state individual and doubles tournament on Tuesday.

Senior Lucia Solis won the Section 6AA individual tournament, and Caitlin Eichten and Ali Heiring took second in the Section 6AA doubles tournament at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness, earning them spots in the state meet.

State will begin at 8 a.m. on Oct. 27 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Solis won the tournament as the No. 4 seed. She opened up play with three matches on Monday, topping Minneapolis Roosevelt’s Sophia Mai 6-0, 6-0, Benilde-St. Margaret’s Morgan Grahek 6-0, 6-0 and Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Kristina Conrad 6-2, 6-1. 

She followed it up on Tuesday with an upset over top-seeded Caroline Ward of Edina, coming from behind to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Solis won the tournament by beating Edina’s Meghana Vasireddy 6-4, 6-2.

Heiring and Eichten entered the tournament as the No. 2 seeds and quickly defeated Andrea Soriano and Tria Lor of Minneapolis Patrick Henry 6-0, 6-0. They followed it up with a win over Minneapolis Southwest’s Emma Reid and Claire Mahoney 6-1, 6-0 and Benilde-St. Margaret’s Kelly Dwyer and Julia Weber 6-1, 6-0 to end Monday’s competition.

On Tuesday, the Trojans’ duo beat Meghan Herring and Kelly Reger of Edina 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Edina’s Morgan Marinovich and Maddie Boyer—the top-ranked team at the tournament—by a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 margin.
