NHL Star Arrested on Lake MInnetonka, Faces BWI Charge

Dustin Byfuglien plays for the Winnipeg Jets and grew up in Minnesota.

A professional hockey player was arrested on Lake Minnetonka yesterday.

Dustin Byfuglien, 26, was taken into custody at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. The arrest took place on Lower Lake South on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior. Byfuglien was released from jail this morning.

Byfuglien was booked on probable cause third-degree boating while intoxicated (BWI) and refusing to submit a blood or urine sample for testing.

Byfuglien currently plays for the Winnepeg Jets. He was a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Black Hawks and was later traded to the Atlanta Thrashers—a franchise that relocated to Winnipeg earlier this year.

The Huffington Post reports that being convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol may complicate Byfuglien's ability to enter Canada—a country that has been known to restrict the entrance of those with DWI or, in this case, a BWI charge.
