Orono Swim and Dive Team Advance to State
The Orono Boys Swim and Dive team will send five athletes to the State Meet this weekend after finishing sixth at the Section 2A meet on February 23 and 25 at Richfield.
During the high school season Orono and Mound Westonka combine swim and dive teams as the OMW co-op team. For the post season competition beginning at Sections, the team must split by school to compete as two separate teams, which has the greatest effect on the relay teams performance.
The Breck/Blake team had the highest team total at 455 points followed by second place Richfield at 260 points. Orono was sixth at 225 and Mound Westonka seventh with 208 points.
Senior captain Ben Hacker commented, “It’s too bad we aren’t able to swim together at Sections, because we sure would have given the reigning champs a run for their money. Holy cow, everyone tapered like crazy.”
Orono junior Mitch Miller took third place in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a qualifying time of 49.50 seconds and took third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a qualifying time of 55.68. Senior captain Tyler Stanchfield advances in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a state qualifying time of 5:04.63 which earned him a second place finish. Junior Spencer Cumming finished fourth in the same event with a state qualifying time of 5:10.55. Senior captain Kelvin Hanson advances to State for the fifth time with a fourth place finish and a state qualifying time of 1:03.71 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.
For the fifth straight year Orono has as assembled a state qualifying team in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Miller, Hanson, Stanchfield and Hacker finished third with a qualifying time of 1:43.30 (25.96/28.87/25.99/22.48). The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with Stanchfield, Hacker, Cumming and Miller also advance with a fifth place finish and a qualifying time of 3:24.21 (52.16/52.07/51.60/48.38).
