The Mound Westonka Boys Swim and Dive team will send six athletes to the State Meet this weekend after finishing seventh at the Section 2A meet.
Mound Westonka junior Tyler Jordahl finished first in diving with a final score of 333.95 and was named Diver of the Meet by the Section 2A coaches. For the third straight year, junior Ryan Strother took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle setting a new Section 2A meet record with a time of 21.98 seconds. For the second year, Strother took first place in the 100 Yard Freestyle, this time setting a meet record with a time of 48.71. Senior Morton Greenslit advances in the 100 Yard Breastroke with a state qualifying time of 1:04.63 and junior Merv Moorhead advances in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a state qualifying time of 58.11.
The 200 Yard Medley Relay with Moorhead, Greenslit, junior Connor Anderson and Strother advance to State with a fourth place finish and a qualifying time of 1:43.79 (26.96/29.47/25.57/21.79). The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with junior Adam Kunz, Moorhead, Anderson and Strother also advance with a fourth place finish and a qualifying time of 1:31.74 (23.47/23.12/23.23/21.92).
During the high school season Mound Westonka and Orono combine swim and dive teams as the OMW co-op team. For the post season competition beginning at Sections, the team must split by school to compete as two separate teams, which has the greatest effect on the relay teams’ performance.
“It’s great to have such a large portion of the team qualify for State,” commented Strother. “It’s all the result of months of dedicated training.”
Class A diving preliminaries start at noon on Thursday, March 1 at the University of Minnesota. Swimming preliminaries begin on Friday, March 2 at noon. Swimming and Diving finals begin at noon on Saturday March 3.
